'Astrid' is a steel hulled wide beam canal boat on a permanent mooring on saltmarsh, in a stunning location on the Deben estuary in Suffolk. She was originally built and fitted out as a houseboat, she has no engine, and is roughly 12 years old. She has been a very comfortable home to myself and my two teenage children for the last 6 years.
She is 12' wide with approx 11'6 internal width, with spray foam insulation, real wood flooring throughout and is connected to mains water and electricity. She is accessed from the river wall via a private jetty which currently has two sheds on it for storage. She is moored against Felixstowe Ferry Boatyard, with vehicle access and parking through the boatyard included in the annual fee.
Open plan kitchen, dining, living room with built in wooden units, full sized electric oven with induction hob, washing machine and space for full sized fridge freezer.
I bought her with two cabins and split the larger one into two to make three bedrooms. It would be very easy to revert to two, giving a lovely, spacious double room and one smaller cabin.
The bathroom has a deep Omnitub Japanese style soaking tub with shower over, Separett composting toilet and basin.
Heating is provided by a multifuel stove in the living area, which I keep alight 24 hours a day in the winter, with backup from a ceiling mounted infrared heater. Plug in infrared heaters keep the bedrooms warm.
I have installed decking over 2/3 of the roof, giving a spacious outdoor area with spectacular views over the river.
There is a large storage compartment under a hatch in the stern, where the engine would have been and another in the bow. The rear storage compartment contains the hot water tank.
She sits on the mud for 90% of the time, floating for a short period around high tide.
