The hull is a GRP moulding, fabricated using the glass fibre reinforced plastic laminate lay-up techniques of the period. Chopped strand mat was used in construction of the hull shell with woven glass fibre rovings used for additional strength in loaded areas. Polyester resins are likely to have been used to consolidate the reinforcing fibres.
Pre-formed longitudinal stringers and transverse frames are bonded and laminated to the hull shell to increase rigidity and provide structural strength to the hull and the area where the ballast keel is attached. Internal bulkheads, furniture and inner GRP shell mouldings are also bonded and tabbed to the hull shell to increase stiffness. The deck, cockpit and forward and aft coach-roofs are a single GRP sandwich moulding comprising laminate skins and internal core material in some areas (type not established) with increased lay-up in areas subjected to increased loads. Bolts, nuts and backing plates/washers were used to attach fittings.
The weight of materials used provides the structural strength in the necessary areas with lighter lay-up in less stressed areas to reduce weight. The specification of observed fittings matches the loads expected in normal operations for a vessel of this size.
The topsides are finished in white gelcoat with blue and gold sheer stripe stickers and motifs and blue and white boot line stripes. Some of these have been recently replaced and new 'Moody 35' decals and other stickers are included ready for fitting.
The hull and deck moulding horizontal flanges are bonded together using marine adhesives and fasteners at the sheer, consolidated with an alloy toe rail that acts as a bed for the fasteners. The fin keel, of cast iron construction, is attached to the reinforced GRP hull using metal fasteners, nuts and backing plates. The semi-balanced, cored, GRP laminate rudder is supported by a hull bearing and a lower bearing located at a split bronze shoe attached to the base of a 50% skeg.
Steering is by a Whitlock chain and cable system attached to a metal quadrant clamped to the head of the rudder stock and manoeuvred using a pedestal mounted wheel located in the cockpit.
The double spreader mast is of extruded anodised aluminium alloy and deck stepped. Standing rigging consists of fore and aft diagonal lowers, continuous cap shrouds, V1/D2’s, forestay and backstay. All observed standing rigging is in stainless steel (s/s) wire with a roller-reefing drum fitted on the forestay. The mainsail is stored on an in-mast furling system.
The hatchway and entry steps from the cockpit are located on the centreline. 2 wash boards are provided, one in solid wood the other in clear perspex.
The engine and machinery space is accessed via a large removable hatch in the inboard bulkhead of the walkway through to the aft cabin and a removable hatch in the heads cabin inboard bulkhead - this gives excellent access. Battery storage is beneath the aft cabin bunk.
Mounted on the cockpit side coamings are 2 x Lewmar 44 ST primary winches with 2 x Antal W16’s secondaries and a single Lewmar 8 for use with the mainsheet, mounted on the aft coach-roof. 2 x Lewmar 8’s are mounted on the coach-roof beneath the sprayhood.
