1976 Nauticat 33 Mk1
Athene, is regretfully for sale.
The Nauticat 33 is a popular motor sailer and makes an excellent liveaboard yacht with ample headroom in most of the boat and the benefit of a pilot house which means you can steer in wet weather in the dry.
Athene was purchased in July 2021 as a live-aboard boat to cruise the United Kingdom waters. Unfortunately for health reasons it is no longer viable for us to do this.
Athene has undergone a very thorough 4 ½ year refit. She is fully equipped and ready to go to sea. Sea trials were completed last year.
Here is a list of the work that has been done.
Hull.
The hull was stripped of anti foul and gel coat below the waterline and allowed to dry out. It was then coated with 2 layers of epoxy resin to replace the gel coat, 2 coats epoxy primer, 2 coats of under water paint and then Hemel hard racing anti fouling. The anti fouling has been lightly sanded each year since and a further coat of hard racing.
Above the waterline multiple coats of paint were sanded off to reveal the original gel coat colours, white band over blue. The gel coat was touched up where necessary and then painted with 2k blue and white paint.
A bow thruster was fitted and all the seacock replaced with reinforced nylon ball valves. A new propeller shaft was fitted and a new drip less propeller shaft seal was fitted. The original propeller was fitted to the new propeller shaft.
Deck.
Both the foredeck and the aft deck were renewed with new beams where necessary covered with 2 layers of 12mm marine plywood. The side decks had the top layer of plywood replaced with marine plywood and then the entire deck was covered with 2 layers of fibreglass bonded with epoxy resin and fibreglass then painted with 2 coats quality deck paint with anti slip additive. The saloon deck house has also been renewed with new beams and 2 layers 12mm marine plywood and similarly treated as the deck.
Deck fittings.
The original Samson posts have been replaced with stainless steel mooring bollards. The anchor chain has been renewed with 30m regulated chain and 30m rode giving a total length of 60m. The new windlass will pull in both the chain and the rode. There is also a kedge anchor stowed in the aft gas locker.
There are ample cleats and fair leads fitted around the bulwarks.
A full set of mooring lines is included and new jack lines.
Rigging is in good order and both masts were taken down to be refitted and painted. The masts are both aluminium. The sails, Genoa, main and mizzen are all in serviceable condition for a cruising yacht.
Deck fittings for diesel, fresh water filling and waste removal are new.
Below decks.
All plumbing has been renewed with 2 lavac toilets with new black water tanks. New fresh water pipes and 200 litre fresh water tank. A new larger colorifier has been fitted which gives lots of hot water and is fitted with an immersion heater for use when connected to shore power.
The fore cabin and aft cabin have been fitted with new mattresses. The fore cabin has been retrimmed with foam backed vinyl as has the saloon headlining.
The galley has a new 2 ring gas cooker with grill and oven and is gimballed.
Also a new compressor refrigerator which is whisper quiet.
Engine.
The engine has been inspected and overhauled including the injector pump and injectors, new marine alternator. There are 2 stainless steel diesel tanks with all apertures at the top of the tank. A dual fuel filter system has been fitted allowing each tank to be selected and which tank receives the returned fuel plus switching between filters. The engine runs well giving 6 knots at 1500 rpm.
Electrics.
Athene is now fitted with a modern inverter charger providing integration with shore power and batteries. There are 3 battery banks, House batteries 2 x 125 Ah AGM, Optima yellow top starter battery, 2 x 100 Ah bow batteries to power the bow thruster and the new windlass.
The batteries are isolated from each other so that overuse of one battery cannot flatten the other batteries.
Wiring and controllers have been fitted for 4 solar panels, which are supplied but not fitted yet.
All new switch gear and fuses for both 230v ac and 12v dc. Some new lighting has been fitted, but many of the original lights have been retained and modernised with LED bulbs.
New navigation lights have been fitted, steaming lights, tricolour sailing light and anchor light.
Safety Equipment
A 6 person life raft is fitted on the fore cabin roof with automatic release should the boat sink.
Life belt and Danbuoy fitted with quick release mounting fitted to aft hand rail.
Powder fire extinguishers fitted in every cabin.
EPIRB mounted in the pilot house.
There are 2 hand throwing lines.
Dinghy
An inflatable dinghy is included with 4 stroke outboard.
This can be hoisted on the Simpson davits at the stern.
We are currently finishing off some of the painting and varnishing.
A full survey for insurance was conducted in 2024 and the small number of issues from that have been rectified. A copy of the survey is available on request.
Location.
Athene is located at the Lawrenny Yacht Station on the river Cleddau up river from Milford Haven. The boat is currently out of the water to give full access for a marine survey. The mooring and storage fees are paid up to 1st March 2027.
