The Rival 38 is a proven ocean going yacht designed by Peter Brett and built to Lloyds Standards. Iola has been upgraded over recent years and has everything needed for long distance cruising. She is set up for solo or short handed sailing and can easily accommodate more crew. Crossing the Atlantic in 2024 we had 3 crew aboard and averaged 6 knots for the 21 days from Gran Canaria to St Lucia. The journey from the UK to the Caribbean was documented in 5 videos and can be viewed on the @sailingoptions YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/@sailingoptions)
From 2022 I have been living aboard, sailing UK waters and preparing for my Atlantic crossing in 2024/2025 which she completed with ease. Iola is a very dry boat and extremely comfortable down below for living on for extended periods. With two heaters (diesel and paraffin), large water tanks, ability to collect rain water from the deck, ample stowage and solar charging she is self contained and able to be independent offshore for long periods. I have not needed to run the engine or use shore power to charge batteries since the new solar arch was installed in 2024.
Standing Rigging replace 2024
New Beta 38HP and stern gear fitted 2020
In May 2025 I sailed iola back from the Caribbean with my partner, via the Azores and Southern Ireland. Iola performed flawlessly and easily handled winds up to 40+ knots and 4.5 meter swells. She is now out of the water at Dickie’s Boatyard in Bangor. There are many pictures and videos of our crossing on the Rival Facebook page and my personal FB page.
